Gaia Soap
by Tamara Neale
Rooted in the earth. Brightened by the sun. Poured in Tofino.
There’s something about this bar.
Gaia has always been that steady, grounded one. The friend who drinks water, goes to bed early, and somehow has glowing skin without trying.
She smells like warm soil and citrus light. Like bare feet on cool earth with the sun hitting your shoulders. Like a strong exhale.
Inspired by the living planet beneath us — the way land and sea meet here in Tofino. Forest floor. Salt air. Golden light. The quiet reminder that we’re not separate from nature… we’re standing in it.
Now. This most recent batch?
Dave came into the studio to help pour it.
I supervised. Obviously. And like to think lined him up for success. Gave extremely clear instructions. Demonstrated. Re-demonstrated. Nodded with authority (haha).
He followed directions very well.
And I hate to say this… but this might be the most beautiful batch we’ve ever poured.
The texture? Unreal.
The color? Glowing.
The cut? Chef’s kiss. (He is a chef, so honestly this tracks.)
It’s the kind of batch where you slice into the loaf and just stand there for a second like, “Ohhh… okay. We did something here.”
Alright. Let’s get into what’s actually inside this beauty.
The Colors (Straight From the Earth)
There are no synthetic dyes in Gaia -- or any of our offerings for the matter!
That golden glow? It all comes from plants and clay.
Turmeric powder (Curcuma longa)
Gives that warm, sun-lit yellow tone. Turmeric is known for its soothing, antioxidant properties and has been used for centuries in traditional skincare. In soap, it adds both color and a earthy depth.
Annatto seed powder (Bixa orellana)
This is where the rich golden-orange warmth comes from. Annatto is derived from seeds of a tropical shrub and creates that vibrant, soil-kissed hue you see in the swirl.
Orange peel powder
Adds subtle texture and a soft botanical speckle. It’s a small detail, but it makes the bar feel alive — like actual plant matter still whispering its origin story.
Golden, French yellow clay + kaolin clay
Clays bring that creamy slip and gentle cleansing feel. French yellow clay is rich in minerals and helps create that warm golden tone, while kaolin clay keeps the lather silky and mild.
The result?
A bar that looks like sunlight hitting earth.
The Oils (The Backbone of the Bar)
Gaia is built on a foundation of slow, nourishing oils:
-
Olive oil (Olea europaea) for a gentle, conditioning cleanse
-
Organic coconut oil (Cocos nucifera) for that rich, bubbly lather
-
Organic Canadian sunflower oil (Helianthus annuus) for lightweight hydration
-
Ethically sourced organic palm oil (Elaeis guineensis) for bar hardness and longevity
-
Organic cocoa butter (Theobroma cacao) for a creamy, stable bar
-
Jojoba oil (Simmondsia chinensis) for skin balance
Plus a touch of Vancouver Island sea salt for added hardness and a subtle nod to the coast we call home.
Everything is saponified the old-fashioned way — cold process, slow cure, sliced and stamped into 5-ounce bars, then left to rest and cure for weeks so they harden beautifully.
The Scent (Warm + Bright)
Gaia smells like warmth and optimism.
Sweet orange.
Lemon.
Pink grapefruit.
Grounded by sandalwood.
A custom coastal blend of pure essential oils.
The citrus wakes you up.
The sandalwood holds you steady.
A Note on This Batch
I’ve poured a lot of soap over the years.
Cardboard molds. Wooden molds. Solo pours. Late nights. Early mornings.
Watching Dave step into the studio and pour Gaia felt different. It felt like movement. Like growth. Like we’re building something together in a new way.
He followed instructions very well.
10/10 listening skills.
Would hire again.
But truly — seeing him in the studio, hands in the work, was really special.
A Few Practical Notes
All our botanical bars are:
-
Vegan
-
100% plant-based
-
Colored naturally
-
Mindfully made by hand in small batches
-
Poured right here in Tofino
To make your bar last longer, keep it out of standing water when not in use. A well-draining soap dish makes all the difference.
Gaia is a reminder that everything we need already exists in nature — color, scent, nourishment, stability.
It’s earthy.
It’s bright.
It’s balanced.
And this batch? It’s a beauty.
If you’ve used Gaia before, I’d love to know what it feels like to you.
And be honest — would you like to see more of Dave in the studio?
Because I sure would. 😏
