As the days get shorter and the rain settles back into Tofino, I find myself reaching for different things. Deeper scents. Warmer rituals. Coffee + spice, cedar + smoke, long baths, something good simmering on the stove and a candle burning while the weather does its thing outside.
This is where you’ll find what we’re making for right now — small-batch candles, botanical soaps, essential oil blends + plant-powered body care inspired by the season we’re actually living in.
Some are old favorites that just make more sense this time of year. Others are made only for a little while. And some come from stories I’ve been carrying around for years.

MADE FOR THE SEASON WE’RE IN
Most of what I make starts because I’m trying to hold onto something. A place I don’t want to forget. A smell that reminds me of someone. The feeling of coming home soaked from the rain, peeling off wet layers and warming up again.
Summer in Tofino is beautifully busy, but I’m always ready when the rain comes back. Life gets smaller in a way I like. We cook more. Baths get longer. There’s something simmering on the stove, something curing on the soap racks and usually a candle burning somewhere in the house. The studio gets busier while everything outside slows down.
This time of year, I want smoke and cedar, coffee and spice. I even broke my seven-year streak of refusing to make a pumpkin candle — because the only one I wanted to make was one that smelled like my Grandma’s pie.
And it’s not all coming out of the studio. Our kitchen gets busy, too — apple crumble made with Canadian-grown Honeycrisp apples, batches of fire cider + more recipes I’ll be sharing on the blog as the weather turns.
The Hobbyist has never really been just about soap and candles. It’s about making things, paying attention to where we live and finding a little more meaning in the everyday.
