Finding Rhythm in Life’s Dance

by Tamara Neale

Tofino, with its wild waves and ancient forests, has always been a grounding force for me. It’s here that I’ve learned one of life’s hardest lessons: progress doesn’t always feel like moving forward. Melody Godfred’s words capture this beautifully:

"I finally found my rhythm when I realized that even the steps backwards were a part of the dance."

For years, I thought growth had to be steady and linear. But life—and business—has taught me otherwise. Whether it’s figuring out how to package products more sustainably, juggling the demands of work and family, or just navigating days that don’t go as planned, the journey often feels messy.

When Things Feel Like They’re Falling Apart

I’ve had moments when I’ve wondered, Is this even working? I’ve spent hours refining ideas, only to start over again. I’ve worried about costs, timing, and whether my choices align with my values. At times, those steps back felt incredibly defeating. But as I sit with those moments now, I’ve come to realize they weren’t wasted at all—they were essential. Each misstep, though insanely frustrating at the time, quietly guided me closer to clarity and a deeper understanding of my path.

Learning from Nature’s Rhythm

Living here on the coast, I’m constantly reminded of nature’s dance. The ocean pulls back before every wave surges forward. The rainforest grows slowly, steadily, through wind and rain. These rhythms have taught me to trust my own. When I take a step back—whether in my personal life or as a maker of soaps and candles—I try to see it as a pause, a reset, and sometimes even a gift.

We’re All in This Together

If you’ve felt like you’re moving backwards lately, I want you to know you’re not alone. It’s so easy to focus on where we think we should be, but it’s okay to stop and recognize the beauty of the dance we’re already in. The backward steps are as much a part of the story as the leaps forward.

So let’s offer ourselves a little more grace and trust that our rhythm—unique and imperfect as it may be—is enough. And when we inevitably stumble or lose our footing, it can be a moment to recognize how even those missteps are woven into the rhythm of our own dance.

Life has a way of surprising us in the most unexpected ways. What twists and turns have shaped your journey lately? I’d truly love to hear—your stories inspire me and remind us all that we’re never alone in this dance.

Sending love from Tofino,
Tam x
