Surviving the 4th Quarter Crunch: How I’m Getting Through the Busy Season
by Tamara Neale
Hey friends,
Anyone else feeling maxed out? Here we are in the fourth quarter—the last, biggest stretch of the year for makers and small businesses—and it’s a wild ride. For many of us, these final months mean a huge surge in orders, inventory prep, holiday launches, and a thousand tiny details to keep everything running smoothly. It’s that "make or break" time, and while it’s so exciting, it’s also a lot.
If you’re like me, you’re probably juggling work demands, spending time with family, catching up with friends, and staying on top of bills—all while maybe caring for a beloved, aging furry family member. (My sweet old dog has been slowing down, and I’m soaking up every precious moment we have together.) And with all this -- and more -- on my plate, I feel stretched thin. It’s that feeling of holding everything up, and thinking that if even one little piece slips, it could send the whole stack tumbling.
So, if you're nodding along, feeling a bit burnt out but trying to power through, here are a few simple things that have helped me catch my breath and keep going. Hopefully, they’ll resonate and give you some ideas for staying sane during all this holiday hoopla!
1. Fueling Up & Hydrating (Yes, It Really Helps!)
Running on caffeine and stress is tempting, but I’ve noticed a massive difference in my energy when I make time for decent meals, water, and enough sleep. I’m not talking fancy nutrition here—just eating something besides toast or snacks in between orders! A simple meal, drinking a glass of water every hour or so, and squeezing in a bit more sleep has done wonders for keeping me grounded and (somewhat) energized.
2. Getting Fresh Air (Even Just 5 Minutes)
When I’m buried in work, stepping outside for a breather can feel like too much. But I promise—taking even five minutes to walk around the block or breathe some fresh air makes me feel like a different person. It’s a tiny reset that helps clear my head and gives me a bit of calm before diving back in.
3. Talking It Out
I’ve realized how much I need my community, especially during this busy season. A quick text to a friend, a chat with another maker, or even a little vent session with my mom or partner can help me feel lighter and less alone. There’s something so reassuring about connecting with people who just get it.
4. Cutting Myself Some Slack
If there’s one mantra I’m holding onto, it’s “I’m doing my best, and that’s enough.” With the holidays around the corner and a never-ending to-do list, I’ve made a commitment to stop beating myself up when things don’t go exactly to plan. A little self-compassion goes a long way, especially when you’re wearing so many hats.
5. Staying Focused on What Matters
In the blur of the season, I try to remember why I’m doing this in the first place: creating products I love, sharing them with you, and building something meaningful. When the chaos starts to get to me, it helps to bring it back to basics, remembering that I’m here for the joy and purpose of it all.
Let’s Get Through This Together
If this season’s got you feeling stretched, please know that you’re not alone. It’s a wild ride, but it’s one we’re on together, and I’m so grateful for the support, the community, and the shared understanding. Thank you for sticking with small businesses like mine.
Wishing you a bit of peace and balance as we tackle this last quarter together!
With love from Tofino,
Tamara xo
