Weekend Waffles

by Tamara Neale

As a mom, I treasure those weekend mornings when the usual routines go out the window, and we can just be together. It’s the simple things that make those moments feel special—like whipping up a batch of waffles. In our house, homemade waffles are a BIG treat and major hit. And I promise you they are super easy to make, freaking delicious, and freeze beautifully for those busier weekday mornings.

Why Make Waffles at Home?

Sure, store-bought waffles are convenient, but there’s nothing like the taste of fresh, homemade waffles. They’re crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and you can customize them with everyone’s favorite toppings. Trust me, your loved one will thank you!

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour - I try to use organic all purpose flour when possible.

  • 1 teaspoon salt - kosher salt if possible

  • 4 teaspoons baking powder

  • 2 tablespoons white sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 ½ cups warm milk

  • ⅓ cup butter, melted

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

These simple ingredients come together to make the best waffles you’ve ever tasted. For toppings I love almond butter, plain yogurt, fresh fruits, chocolate/hazelnut spread, and low sugar jams.

How to Make Them:

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

Get everything out and measured before you start. It’ll make things so much easier, especially if you've got little helpers.

Step 2: Preheat Your Waffle Iron

Plug it in and let it heat up while you prepare the batter. I picked up mine from Canadian Tire for about $20.00.

Step 3: Mix Dry Ingredients

In a big bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar. This is where the magic starts!

Step 4: Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk the eggs. Add the warm milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract, and mix it all up.

Step 5: Make the Batter

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently. Don’t overmix—a few lumps are okay and will keep the waffles light and fluffy.

Step 6: Cook the Waffles

Grease the waffle iron lightly with cooking spray or butter, then pour in the batter. Close the lid and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crispy. Peek in and check on them—it’s half the fun!

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

Pop them on a plate and let everyone add their favorite toppings. Maple syrup, fruit, whipped cream, or even a little chocolate sauce—there’s no wrong answer here.

Tips for the Best Waffles:

  • Warm milk works best: It blends the batter more smoothly.

  • Preheat properly: A hot waffle iron makes the waffles perfectly crisp.

  • Avoid stacking: Keep waffles crispy by placing them in a single layer on a wire rack.

Why We Love This Recipe

It’s quick, it’s easy, and it makes mornings feel extra special. The waffles are fluffy, flavorful, and made with love. Plus, they’re a great way to bring the family together around the breakfast table. Whether it’s a weekend treat or a weekday surprise, these waffles never fail to bring smiles.

A Delicious Morning Awaits

Homemade waffles are more than just breakfast; they’re a way to slow down and enjoy the little moments with your loved ones. You’ll be the hero of the morning—I promise!

If you make them, I'd love to know what your thoughts. Or if you have any questions, please let me know!
